Charters Towers is located along the "Overlander's Way",
just 90 minutes drive west of Townsville. 
This historical gold mining town was once known as "The World"
and today it is a bustling rural centre that celebrates its grand history
through wonderfully preserved heritage buildings, pubs, museums and streetscapes.
Other points of interest while you are in Charters Towers include The
Miner's Cottage, Historic Ambulance Centre and the largest free roaming herd of Texas Longhorn Cattle in Australia. Why not play a game of billiards on the original
tables at the Civic Club, historically a Gentleman's Club that is now
open to all.
The
historic World Theatre is also a must see and for the outdoors type there is a variety of recreational activities including camping, fishing and bird watching. Take a drive out to ravenswood, the burdekin falls dam or greenvale.. A golden city with a colourful past, it is the lively heritage
that Charters Towers brings to life, that makes this town a must see on
