On the Bruce Highway, the sugar town of Ingham, situated on the banks
of the Herbert River, exhibits a strong Italian tradition, as evidenced
in the architecture, culture and customs of the region.
The
Noorla Heritage Resort is a magnificent example of Italian Art Deco architecture
and along with the East Ingham Hotel, has some stunning hand made Italian
tile floors. The two local delis are famous for their wide selections
of Italian and other European delicacies and the women's dress shops exhibit
the famous Italian flair for fashion. However the "Little Italy of
the North" also has strong links to its Australian heritage.
The city is host to the original "Pub With No Beer", of which
the famous Slim Dusty tale was written. In its heyday the pub was drunk
dry of beer by the American servicemen posted to North Queensland.
Tyto Wetlands, located on the Southern approach to Ingham is Australia's
largest urban wetlands rehabilitation project with over 200 bird species
having been sighted in this beautiful area of ponds, waterways, islands
and grasslands. The hundreds of Agile Wallabies that call Tyto home are
an unexpected attraction. The most ideal times to visit the wetlands are
early morning or late afternoon. June 2007 was the beginning of an exciting
new era with the Tyto Wetlands Centre opening at the entrance to Tyto
Wetlands. This centre features amazing displays with a focus on bird watching
and natural attractions and should be your first port of call for information
on the shire. The displays are fun for the young and young at heart.
Wallaman
Falls in the Girringun (Lumholtz) National Park is the most accessible
of seven waterfall National Parks in the North Queensland region and forms
part of a World Heritage listed area. Water collected from the Herbert
River and tributaries plunges 268 metres straight down the craggy walls
in what is the highest, sheer drop waterfall in Australia. Care is needed
when driving on the range road as Cassowaries are often spotted on the
road.
