Few places on earth have World Heritage-listed rainforests
and easy access to the Great Barrier Reef. Mission Beach has all this.
It is one of the few unspoilt destinations in Far North Queensland.
Situated two and half hours north of Townsville and two hours south
of Cairns, it has 14 kilometres of golden beaches with a backdrop of World
Heritage-listed rainforests. The Mission Beach area is 24 kilometres of
coastline, which takes in the villages of Garners Beach, Bingil Bay, Mission
Beach, Wongaling Beach and South Mission Beach.
The Great Barrier Reef is accessible, with several tours leaving daily
from Clump Point Jetty. The elusive cassowary, Australia's second-largest
bird after the emu, can be found in these forests or even crossing the
roads close to the villages. A local coach service connects three times
daily with Cairns Airport and Greyhound and Premier have regular bus services
to Mission Beach and Wongaling Beach.
Accommodation varies from luxury resorts with views to Dunk island to
romantic B&B's, comfortable self contained units and a variety of
backpackers situated either close to the beach or in the rainforest.
Rafting on the Tully River must be one of the highlights for any visitor
to this region. Skydiving is also a popular way of getting some thrills!
There is easy access to Dunk Island and spend a day exploring its rainforest
and beaches or Sea Kayak or Jet Ski across to the island. You can tour
around the islands of the Family Group. Dolphins, Turtles and Dugongs
are often seen on this day trip.
There are many wonderful walking tracks in the area ranging
from one hour to half a day for you to experience the wonders of the tropical
rainforest. The
newly developed Misty Mountain Walking Trails are easily accessible and
a delight for the experienced bush walker.
