Thuringowa

"BEACHES, RIVERS AND RAINFOREST" are featured in the landscape of Thuringowa, a city that provides attractions for everyone.

The northern beaches region is made up of five magnificent beaches, with kilometres of white sandy stretches for sun lovers and fishers to enjoy. The beautiful Ross River meanders through the western suburbs, and is popular for a multitude of leisure pursuits. Extensive walking tracks and bikeways support it.

At Thuringowa Library enjoy the heritage collection and have a chat with our historian before viewing historical photographs from across the North Queensland region on CD Rom. Make sure you ask for a copy of Thuringowa Past and Present and collect a guide to the many attractions in Thuringowa.

Ask for the brochure on World War II tours before slipping next door into Pinnacles gallery to view a diversity of art, social history and educational exhibitions both local and touring, which focus on local communities.

For a unique experience, ask for directions to the Lakeside Sound Garden (an installation of sculpture/sound instruments), where children can enjoy a musical experience playing on gongs, drums and thong-a-phone situated on Golf Links Drive, Kirwan. On your way north stop at Rollingstone and take a look at the Railway Museum, the restored Rollingstone Railway station filled with historical mementos of the area.

Soon to be unveiled is the 'Riverway' project to enhance the use of the Ross River in the Thuringowa area. The first stage includes the Riverway Arts Centre, the 4000sqm swimming lagoons, the village spine walkway, which will host markets and festival activities, an amphitheatre formed by the grassed roof of the Arts Centre, carparks and Village Boulevard which is the shady laneway entrance to Riverway.
